Anyone who saw the previews before Transformers knows what I'm talking about, although I didn't see it, I've heard the internet buzz and am very intrigued.

All the bootlegs of the trailer are being removed from youtube soon after being posted, so good luck finding one that works. I was lucky enough to see a high quality one this morning before it got the banhammer.

If you don't know about it, it's a movie set in New York supposedly on the date 1-18-08 (according to the timestamps on the photos at http://www.1-18-08.com one of the two official sites for the movie)
It seems to be filmed with handheld camcorders ala blair witch, but professionally done with hollywood effects and such. The trailer starts out at a going away party for some guy named "Rob" suddenly the lights go out and there's an explosion, people at the party run out on the roof where they witness a giant "ball" of lava or flames spewing up from the earth and big chunks of it flying into the city, destroying buildings and cars (and probably people). They run downstairs and into the street where everyone is in a panic, screaming and yelling. Someone yells "I saw it, it's alive, it's huge!" then you see the head of the Statue of Liberty crash through a building and into the street. Screen goes black and says "From producer J.J. Abrams, coming 1-18-08" then lists some other producers and maybe the director, I can't remember.

when I saw it before transformers in the theaters I lolled at the "home cam", yet crystal clear, obviously film. Ive wondered for years why they go through such great lengths shooting with film and trying to make it look like home footage, adding shaking, tons of effects etc, it looks like shit.. just use an actual fucking sony handycam

edit edit: shitty guerrilla marketing done by big huge official corporations makes me double lol. sadly, it will end up working though.

Rumors are it's a revamp of the godzilla franchise, or possibly Voltron.

These aren't my rumors, just some speculation i've heard on the intarwebs.

on the 1-18-08 website i found out you can trick flash into duplicating the pictures, so I was playing around and lined up the faces and it seems to eerily match:

The lighting on the faces is different, so it's hard to tell if it's the same face or not. Anything is possible at this point.

My friends and I thought godzilla when we saw it, but that's just what came to mind. The marketing worked, though...we were all wondering what the hell this thing is.

It's definitely not Godzilla, ToHo retired their monsters until 2013 from what I've heard, but even so, Sony owns the distribution rights to Godzilla in the US. This movie is made by Paramount.
