Oh I know, I'm a nerd like that. Granted I didn't know it when I first played it, but I figured it out eventually. They didn't release all of the original games in the US. Now I've got VII via the Anthology collection on PS1, and also on GBA. Overall, I think VI, VII and VIII were my favorites. I haven't played IX, and while I enjoyed X, I wouldn't put it on my favorites list for any other reason than I had a juvenile crush on Yuna back in the day.
The game was known as Final Fantasy III when it was first released in North America. What you played when you were a kid actually was Final Fantasy VI.
