CPU Help
Alrighty, so I have currently a Pentium 4 775 socket that I want to replace with a Pentium D (DC) now with changing CPUs will I need to re-install my OS? or is just as straight forward as just replacing the old with the new? I really dont wanna eff up meh PC
Re: CPU Help
No you shouldn't have to reinstall OS, just make sure you re-apply thermal paste and stuff if you're putting on the new proc and heatsink, and to clean gunk off your old heatsink if you're using the same one.

Re: CPU Help
can i leave that on though, i dont have any thermal paste let alone the want to buy more.... :/
Re: CPU Help
Reusing thermal compound is pretty much universally bad. It's cheap stuff, so go grab a tube (and you'll never need to buy it again). Be sure not to use too much if it's the paste style - it's recommended to use a razor blade to smooth it out as that tends to give about the right amount.
A normality test:

If you are no longer connected to the internet, you need to apply more wax to your modem: it'll make it go faster.
If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

Re: CPU Help
If you are changing from a single core to a dual core, yes, you will have to reinstall windows.

Oh I didn't even notice about the single core to dual core. Yeah it might help if you reinstall OS =)
And for thermal compound, get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835100007
Cheap and awesome and you'll use it for future builds too. I don't know if it's different for older Pentiums, but I don't think you should spread it out like that... usually you just put a drop or a thin line and let the heatsink and heat itself spread it out evenly, at least that's how you do it on Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quads.

Other Thoughts: Got some on my finger, now my body temperature is 10-15 degrees lower. How do I explain that to my doctor? LESS IS MORE!! USE ONLY TWO RICE SIZED GRAINS (UNCOOKED) WORTH OF ARCTIC SILVER ON THE CENTER OF CPU.

XP won't even boot if you drop in a dualcore from a single core

Re: CPU Help
All problems aside why would you want Vista Ultimate?
Save yourself the RAM and just go with the Vista Basic or whatever.
Unless if you actually bought Ultimate thinking it'd be worth it... I'm sorry.
I'd reinstall my OS after changing CPUs unless if they're the exact same CPU... just to prevent any potential headaches down the road.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit is awesome, dunno what you're talking about. I wouldn't go back to XP.

Vista Ultimate 64-Bit is awesome, actually.
The next version of Windows coming out in a couple years is going to be king though. You just wait.

Re: CPU Help
I only have 2 GB of RAM, the less vista I have the better.
Not that this thread is about the whole "lol vista sucks" argument...

Wow, just a few years ago that statement would have seemed ridiculous...letshavetea wrote:I only have 2 GB of RAM
