I guess people spend that much on clothes. Skins are just digital clothes, and Riot is a fashionista. Can't he just express himself?

It's not like the money is GONE though, the market fluctuates and I can always just sell it for Steam games if I want.

And I treat Paypal like fake money! I got it from internet items so gobba spend on it on other internets!

Does this belong in the investments thread?

Throwing your money away is not an investment

I'm feeling like Riot might actually be retarded.

Do you guys realize the amount of money you have wasted on frivolous things that nevertheless bring you enjoyment?

You know..... Riot has a point, we've all bought dumb bullshit before.

But seriously $130 for a KNIFE skin in a game where you shoot badmans with GUNS -- that's pretty up there on the dumb bullshit list.

I'm not taking issue with the purchase itself, just the cost.

I'm not sure I own a single piece of *real* clothing that cost me that much.

Well I have gun skins too, but nothing nearly as expensive! I play in two leagues which often times have streamed matches and we play all the time, so having a cool knife to see as I run around the maps for hours a day is cool (and other people can see too)! Like I said, I can sell it on market any minute I want and get money back and probably even more since knife prices always fluctuate. There are a lot of the upper end knives that sell for $300-$1000. I'm not nearly as crazy as some people.

As for the cost, like I said, it's not like a "purchase and done" thing. I can sell it for a lot whenever and always use that money for Steam games. I haven't bought myself new clothes in like 4 years lol.

Absolutely I've bought dumb shit. And I've bought a lot of expensive shit. But hopefully when I do, it's something that I can use or share.

This stems from a desire to stop collecting things that don't have any real utility. For instance, I used to buy a lot of Bemani merchandise. But I found that I wasn't "using" them...I wasn't playing with them or displaying them. I had them and I thought they were neat, but they were just there...in a box somewhere or whatever.

So now when I see merch for something that I like, I have to make a case for it for myself before I buy it. Like, what am I going to do with it? And "putting it in a box on a shelf" is not acceptable.

I also don't like to invest in things that are not just "pure" investments...stuff like stocks or bonds. If I'm buying a "thing," I expect to use it. Whatever value I get out of it is the use I get out of it. I do not consider my home an investment. I do not consider art an investment. I don't want to invest in anything that I can get attached to, have sentimental value for, or otherwise have any pause in selling to make a profit.

If I buy a piece of art, I want to hang it on the wall and enjoy it. I don't want someone to offer to pay me more than I paid to take it away from me.

As another example, I absolutely HATE the idea of buying things like toys and keeping them in boxes with the idea that they'll be worth more later.

How is it any different than buying art to enjoy?

I think the art rationale is pretty ridiculous. You could say the same of any purchase of anything for any reason.

Argument summary:

Riot spent $130 on some digital jewelry for a video game he likes which was a waste of money at worst and an extremely unconventional investment at best, but it makes him happy and nobody got hurt so who cares.
