OK, holy shit.

Back in the motherfucking day before electronic music became what we know it as today, there were two distinctly different styles of music that were at the time just lumped together as "Electronic music" because no one really knew how to define either genre.

One genre was more or less what we have today - weird sounding beats that can only be made with a synthesizer. This sort of music was posthumously termed "Krautrock" and pretty much influenced all the stupid shit like Techno, J-Core, Space Music, and the wonderful Intelligent Dance Music (Potter's favorite) that we have today.

The other genre was taking samples of recorded noise and splicing it together to make something that sounds like vaguely like music. The Beatles' "Revolution 9" is probably the most famous example of this type of bullshit music. I honestly don't know how you would define this genre today, but Wikipedia labels it with "Avant-Guarde" or "Experimental" and other vague terms like that.

My point is that, at the time (late 1960s through late 1980s), before subgenres of electronic music started becoming more and more defined, anything that wasn't made with traditional instruments was just labeled as Electronica.

I don't recall exactly what I said, but 2 Live Crew's most famous single "Me So Horny" can be loosely defined as Electronica since the song is just samples of shit taken from movies played against a beat from a drum machine. If I said the group itself was an Electronic group then I misspoke - I don't remember the context of the conversation we were all having, but I probably said something like "Oh that's the band that made that Electronic song "Me So Horny.""

How does being well versed in the world of obscure music have anything to do with 2 Live Crew? They were pretty high up on the charts back in the day.

Side note: This is the first time I've heard Revolution 9. The Beatles are still nothing but average wrapped in hype. Parents tell kids the Beatles were gods gift to music, and now those kids have grown up with this core belief. I'm the same way about many things. Now they're just popular because they're popular.

I hate to say it but that is all just very very wrong and I don't have nearly as long as it would take to explain why

Music is a special thing because everyone is wrong on everything but it all works out in the end and we all get high as shit.

We haven't shown them yet and the other teachers in there for the class (it is a huge class of 107 with four teachers) are probably gonna show some they had in mind. I will take a look at some of the suggestions and let you know what we show and their reactions soon.

I watched it about 4 times last night, and the first thing that went through my mind when I woke up this morning is that I need to watch it again.

That video is kind of old, but I'm a big fan of it's surreal style and happy, generic poppy sounds.
