Interesting read. I'd always assumed it was reasonably popular in Japan among its fans, but it sounds like it's niche as hell over there too. Hell, the throngs of 16-year-olds whose parents failed at their most important job are as large as any show in Tokyo. At the time of this post, there are 4 J-core playlists on Spotify.
If I ever make it to grorious nippon, I'd like to hit up that record store for sure.

I know nothing about actual real ass Japan but I have a feeling that the club scene there is big but the venues are all really small so you get a lot of diverse, niche clubs that can be sustained by a small but dedicated clientele. Western clubs are much bigger but have to cater to the lowest common denominator and cast a large net to wrangle people in which is why you'll have venues that have country night, hip-hop night, and top 40 night all in the same week.
