The scale is neat. It was kind of a bitch to get connected (apparently a lot of people have problems with it), but I like it now that I've got it working.

I do love Fogo...but this gift seems like it has more longevity. I can use it every day! Thanks guys, it's pretty cool and I appreciate it!

Potter, the 3:2 aspect ratio of my new camera is...weird.

yeah I can feel that, my GH3 is native 4:3, most people just stick it into 16x9 mode for stills (even cropped the resolution is 2much), but I've learned to keep it in full frame raw and just crop to whatever aspect ratio I think fits in post, having spare headroom is nice!

I guess I should have specified that I was talking about my still camera, the G7 X. Although I think that's probably what you assumed I was talking about.

I've also started shooting RAWs with this camera. At 20MP (5472x3648), it's way more res than I'll probably ever need for anything, but I've really been enjoying the flexibility in post of having RAW (and I know I've only barely scratched the surface of what I can do with it).

But damn...between this and the new video camera, I'm going to eat external HDDs for breakfast storing whatever I shoot. These RAWs are around 20 MB each!

but yeah raw is great, even if you just take advantage of being able to white balance after the fact and even expose to an extent, recovering a lot of shadows that would otherwise be crushed or highlights that would be blown out

Yup. That's about all I've been doing so far and it's already AMAZING!

It really reminds me of the old days I spent in the lab developing film (yes, I really did that) and all the little things I could do to improve or change the way the prints looked. But the digital way is faster, costs a lot less, and doesn't smell funny.

If you really want to have some fun, play with exposure and/or focus bracketing and merge it all into a DNG or similar. You can then REALLY play with exposure and even (to some degree) focus in post.

Though if you REALLY want to play with focus in post, get a light field camera.

I've thought about getting a light field camera just to play around with. The concept seems pretty neat.
