Gah I've solved it!
I now understand why kids are Emo and shop at Hot Topic and listen to Avril Lavigne, I never thought I'd figure it out but I now believe I have!
It's because they're tired, NOT because it's cool, I mean when you're tired like me *Insomniac* you for some reason want to wear big baggy black pants with chains and spikes, and dye your hair black and pretend you're punk!
Booyah I'm a genius!
Seriously lack of sleep really helps you see things for how they really are, I mean seriously try not sleeping at night for a few days and you'll unlock a mystery that at one time semmed unsolvable.

I shop at hot topic sometimes, but don't really do the other things mentioned in your rant... especially the listen to avril lavigne part.

Crappy bands like Story of the Year, Fallout Boy, and The Used are the "emo" that Hot Topic sells.
Real emo was the stuff that Fugazi and Cursive and At The Drive-In play/played. This new post-hardcore stuff isn't nearly as good as the old emo and real hardcore(alexisonfire, fear before, norma jean, etc.).
And emo, scenester-kill-the-good-stuff fashion wise, is tight pants and childrens shirts and long black hair covering one eye perfectly. Not saying that everyone who dresses "emo" kills the true hxc and emo scene(heck, I have a couple pairs of girls jeans and I wear small shirts), just saying that alot of the kids who do it as something to be catagorized as are ruining it for everyone.

That's how it goes with almost every fashion trend that starts like that. It's based on something legit, but mass marketed and diluted beyond belief, to the point that it makes whoever started it look bad.
I've had some of the rabid hot topic fans call me a poser before. I think they've got some things mixed up...I've been this way for a looooong time.

Style is all pretty relative. It just depends on what kind of people you're trying to appeal to.
