I talked to the owner today. He said he has the upgrade for Zero, and is going to try and contact his supplier so it can get installed in the next few days.
He mentioned some other things that he'd have as prizes or benefits of the $10 entry. Something about Chic-Fil-A supplying sandwiches to the participants (free or not I don't know, but I'd assume so. The two places are pretty buddy-buddy) and some coupons for various places in the mall maybe. I think he said he's also going to have PIU T-shirts of some sort from Andamiro or somewhere.
He also said he thought he saw something in the rules about "the bar being forbidden," but I told him that 1) some of the songs in the game really need that thing and 2) that kind of rule would probably not sit well with most people. Further review of the rules at the place showed that it wasn't a rule, but he still seemed to think there was something like that in them. Weird.

PIU shirts from Andamiro?! Hell yeah, this tournament gets better and better every time I check the thread.
I'd have to say that if the bar is not allowed at all would not sit well with many people. I personally could do it, but I'm not sure of very many others who would even want to attempt most of the harder stuff without the aid of the bar. I'm pretty sure it would draw a good deal of the people away.
And keep us updated on when the upgrade goes in the machine (in fact, the guy could probably do it himself; from my understanding it's not too hard) and I should be up there ASAP to give it a spin.

I'd be happy to show up and install the upgrade if he'd rather not pay someone to do it. My only cost is a few "test games" to "make sure everything works properly".
It's not that difficult to install, but if you've never been inside the system unit, it may not be immediately obvious what to do, and there are a few mechanical tricks that can help out a lot.
And yes, no bar would make some things kinda tough. That would pretty much drop me back down to 12-13s, whereas I can easily A upwards of a 17-18 with the bar. The harder stuff just gets so flat out crazy that never touching the bar is extremely difficult.

A normality test:

If you are no longer connected to the internet, you need to apply more wax to your modem: it'll make it go faster.
If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

I wonder if his kit came with any instructions. Lord knows ours didn't!MonMotha wrote:It's not that difficult to install, but if you've never been inside the system unit, it may not be immediately obvious what to do, and there are a few mechanical tricks that can help out a lot.

It's pretty simple stuff for anyone moderately familiar with a PC but may not have much correlation to most other arcade machines. I could easily understand either a no-brainer reaction or one of trepidation.
When I talked with Christina (who also works for Great X-scape and is handling publicity and stuff for the tournament), we agreed to NOT forbid bar-holding. She was a little bit ambivalent about it, but I explained to her that the hardest PIU songs are pretty much impossible for most people without at least a little bit of help from the bar. Not to mention disallowing the bar entirely might be somewhat dangerous.
So bottom line is bar-holding IS allowed.
EDIT: I'm meeting with Christina tomorrow afternoon to make final plans; so full details, including prize info and times, should be posted sometime this weekend.

IIRC, he characterizes his level of knowledge as "nontechnical but literate," but he seemed to have plans to do it himself (and was fairly confident that he'd succeed). Given that, what's your best ETI (estimated time of installation)?Ho wrote:I wonder if his kit came with any instructions.
