mods are what ppl do when they can't grasp the original concept/requirements of the game itself.
Mods are the BGH of WC3 and what killed it :-/

I got bored with normal war3, RTSs just don't hold my attention that long, but DOTA was a fun 40-50 minute game that was with one character, and all my friends played it, so it's a lot of fun

Not always true, though admitedly this does happen quite a bit.
After I've beaten a game, and I start to get bored with it, it's nice to browse the internet and find mods/levels or enhancements for the game. Yeah, some of them are lame, but every now and then you find one that uses the core principles of the game, and expands on them...not detract from them to make it easier.
I used to mod and design levels for the original Doom series, generally Doom 2. I beat the living shit out of that game, so I wanted to find ways to challenge myself even more. I also did some weapon tweaks just for fun, but I never released them or anything.
I was working on an entire new 30 level campaign running on the Doom 2 engine for a while, but I couldn't get my editor to work properly after a while, so I just scrapped the project.
I'd love to edit for Doom 3, but I havn't even tried it yet. Maybe someday.

I assumed he just meants mods as in game types, not actual mods.
If you meant mods, then it's really not a question of not getting the original game, it's that you want more out of the game. Why the hell would you buy halflife and NOT play CS DOD TFC etc?
If there are a ton of different games all from one game, then why the hell wouldn't you want the other games too?
I think he doesn't mean full conversion though, just mods such as more powerful guns or something, cheating more or less.
In RTSs though, mods like DOTA (Maps in other words) are for people who don't like the game after they bought it IMO. I bought the game thinking I'd like it, and I played for a while, but it was too boring, so I stopped playing till I saw dota, and I had played TDs a bit before that, cause they were short little fun things to do, instead of spending 4 hours playing one game...
That's boring as hell for me, I can't even stand watching a two hour movie that I love anymore, I get bored. fuckin' ADD
