What music should I play [At United Skates][Eastside]?

Post by Grubb »

At the risk of making yet another music-based thread. I have a serious question.

I resently got a job as the new DJ at United Skates of America.

Basically, I was hired as the token White Guy. And it's my job to play all the music that isn't Gangsta' Rap or Modern Hip-Hop. (However, I will be playing some classic 80's rap and old school hip-hop)

Anyway, basically, what songs do you think would be good for me to play?

Basically, there are only 3 rules I have to follow.

1. No Cusswords.

I can use songs with one or two curse words in it on Adult Night. But other than that, the only way I can use a song is if I can find a Radio Edit or Clean Mix for it.

2. Stay away from Innuendo.

I can't play songs with blaintant Sex, Violence, or Drug references.

(Example: Afroman - Because I Got High)

3. Strange Music / Video Game Stuff.

This isn't acutally a rule of the company. It's just kind of an obvious rule. Most people arn't going to like it if I start playing stuff like "All your base are belong to us!"

(Examples: Aphex Twins - Powerpill Pacman, Stuff from the Final Fantasy series)
----------

Anyway, Music that I need to focus on are things like...

1. Christian Music

Often, I'm going to be playing for Church Groups. But frankly, I don't know shit about Christan rock music. So, I need lots of help with this.

(Example: Zoe Girl)

2. Kid's Music

Often, I'm going to have to play "Disney Radio" style music. I don't listen to Disney Radio, so I don't know everything that entails.

(Example: Hillary Duff)

3. West Coast

Anything that sounds like west coast Hip-Hop, Punk, Alternative and the likes.

(Examples:The Ataris, Green Day)

4. Pretty much anything.

I could always use more Electronica, and stuff from the 80's and early 90's. But I can't play anything that's too strange.

----------

On a slightly different note. I'm going to try and push to have like, a special night, maybe once a month, where I can play something normally not herd in public. Such as J-Pop Night. Would anybody be interested in attending if I did such a thing?

Anyway, any constructive input you guys can give me would be appricated.

Typical skating rink kids aren't gonna listen to my kind of music...
i.e. hxc, screamo, indie rock, trance, hard house.....
so I'm not sure how much help I'll be...
I'd suggest mainstream electronica since the real stuff will confuse and be disliked by the kids. I shudder to say this, but stuff like DJ Sammy and JS16.

and if anyone even so as slightly suggests Darude, they will meet a fiery horrible fate.

Most Christian music is not exactly my taste(i.e. all those rappers and super hardcore Christian bands) so I would probably say Reliant K or something.
2. Kid's Music

Often, I'm going to have to play "Disney Radio" style music. I don't listen to Disney Radio, so I don't know everything that entails.

No idea. You could probably pull some cartoon themesongs or something.
3. West Coast

Anything that sounds like west coast Hip-Hop, Punk, Alternative and the likes.

(Examples:The Ataris, Green Day)
Not all west coast but oh well; mxpx is clean, some stuff by the descendents is, diagonal might be too different for people at the roller rink, they might not like comeback kid, hateen is some good punk but its not west coast(or even anywhere in america)... I guess you could play some weezer or something for the slow parts... thats about all that consists of my clean music

you could check out !!! but make sure to get clean songs. if you are looking for classics, oakenfold and van dyke are staples. if you are looking for newer stuff check out philosomatika.com for some great goa-psy trance. Its really trippy so you might have to check with you overseers.

rollerskating/blading around a circle for hours on end isnt really my thing. sorry.

Goa-psy, the shroom head's trance. Well, most raves have drugs, but goa-psy festivals and performances seem to be running even more rampant than the others.
Anyways, Oakenfold would be good for the public, since they like recognizable stuff and would shudder at good trance like AVB or hard house like Tidy Boys.

You know, the Rink is available for rent as a Dance Club instead of a roller rink, if you so choose.

I could just hold a dance party.

DJ Mystik(it's a k, not a c) has been credited with castles in the sky(which is really Ian Van Dahl) and angel falls(which is really Ayla).

The Fur Elise is Mystik though, it's just through some p2p messups some songs have been named to him rather than their real artists.

Yeah, it is!

I've only worked one day so far, I was just shadowing the current DJ. He's cool and all. But frankly, I could blow him away with my skills.

He's a nice guy, I don't want to start a rivalry with him or anything. Besides, he plays all the Rap and Hip-Hop, which I don't know that much at all. But I hope to learn from him. Even though I don't like that kinda music, I'm probably going to end up playing a lot of it.

You could throw in some mainstream radio edited rock, some of the more recognizeable stuff, just to shake things up. Godsmack's newer stuff isn't really hardcore, namely Serenity and Running blind.
Oh, perhaps you could use Orgy's version of Blue Monday? It's a remix of an 80's song. Also from them, Fiction (dreams in digital), might be a good choice.

If you want groups that are similar to Flock of Seagulls try stuff like Duran Duran, Thomas Dolby, Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads, Eurythmics, Roxette, New Order, INXS, U2, The Police, Culture Club, A-Ha, Devo, Men at Work, B-52's, Oingo Boingo, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and Human League.

If you want some good Christian Music I would recommend.

Sufjan Stevens - Joy! Joy! Joy! or Demetrius or almost anything of this cd:
