I actually had a discussion with someone about this once. He came to the conclusion that you would need five things to come to power... I don't remember them all but it was something like

Money
Weapons
Manipulation

To actually take over the world, you would need both a lot of money, a massive military, and an unpresidented amount of political leverage. After that, to keep the world 'at peace' you would need to rule under the guise of peace and love, while really, you're using the military to secretly destroy anyone who speaks out against you before they gain the public's attention.
Religion is a good means of keeping the masses under control. It's worked in the past, and it seems it still works today as well.
